Undercar Noises when shifting/accel 200 1976

I have a '76 242 with M46 that is pretty new to me. If the windows are open, I can hear a rattle from under the car when I shift. If I keep the clutch disengaged and just shift back and forth between two gears, I can replicate it. However, I also hear the same noise when I go from coasting to acceleration and also when I let off the throttle and coast again - almost like a bad U-joint. I can't figure out what would make this noise under these two circumstances. Any ideas?

Another clue may be that the shift lever has about an inch of vertical play in it - I can lift the whole thing upwards. I assume that the support member is loose at the opposite end, but it's hard to tell with the tranny in the car.

Thanks-
Eric
