Another possibility is retarded ignition. I run mine at about 20° BTDC
with everything hooked up. That is about what you get if you adjust it
by ear for fastest idle and if you don't get pinging, you can advance
it even further and will probably get more power and cooler exhaust.
When it fires late the fuel is still burning when it comes out the exhaust.
