4th Gear Engagement 700 1989

I have a 194K miles on my 740GL. About two years ago, I noted the 4th Gear Disengagement Orange Arrow on the dash had started to glow very dim and gradually getting brighter over about the last two years even though gear shift disenagement button had not been activated. When activated, the light would be bright as usual and the disengagement worked normally. At all times, the transmission peformed normally.

Yesterday, the transmission would not upshift into 4th gear. Pushing the disengagement button several times made the transmission upshift normally finally making me suspect the engagement button was faulty. Today, it would not upshift into fourth gear again. I took the engagement button out and check it out with a ohm meter and it appears to me functionally properly.

When this problem occurred, the dash 4th gears disengagement orange arrow was lit up indicating fourth gear disengagement. I am retired and can ill afford an expensive repair. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.
