960 Timing belt interval 900 1994

I have a friend with a '93 960, with a '94 engine in it ( the one with the longer 23mm widetiming belt that is rated for 50,000 miles).

I just put a new t-belt on it but was curious as to what the general consensus on the 50,000 mile belt change interval was.
Is a shorter more conservative belt change interval for safety a good idea? and what change intervals are everybody using?

All of this comes to mind after the t-belt on my wifes '90 240 wagon came apart about 4000 miles prematuraly on her way to work yesterday morning .

the offending belt that gave out early was a Roulounds, in case anybody is keeping track of such things.
