For almost a year now I had been experiencing an intermittent stalling problem in my 85' 240. Initially about 2 years ago the car would intermittently cut-off during driving but without causing the car to stall. This intermittent problem would last for about 0.5 seconds. I replaced the 511 ECU with a used 544 which worked fine for about 6 months. After that the car would seem to starve from fuel after long trips ( I used to drive to work for 95 miles a day). Then summer came and the car started to stall about 5-6 minutes after driving in hot weather. It would take about an hour to cool down and restart. On the meantime I had replaced the intank fuel pump, main fuel pump, tried a known working AMM meter, replaced spark plugs. I had serviced the engine spade fuse in the engine compartment, cleaned all the fuses and replaced the FI relay with a new one. I finally replaced the old 511 which seems to work but with still that intermittent cut-off problem. I ordered a used 544 ECU and I replaced it. For about 2 days it seemed to work perfectly. Until this morning after driving to my new job (which is 2 miles away) the car stalled after 1 mile from home while in idle. I cranked the engine for a couple of seconds and it restarted. I drove quickly home and it stalled 1-2 more times where the car restarted without problem after 5-8 seconds of cranking. I didn't notice that there was a drivability problem while the car was in move. It would stall only when idle. And just started after some cranking. After I reached home the car seemed to drive just fine and I couldn't figure out a way to make it stall again. I might drive it again this afternoon to see how it behaves.
I really don't know what is going on..... The good thing is that I have an alternative car and I work very close at home now (2.1 Miles)
I don't know if the problem is with one of the following...
1) Battery which is about 4 years old
2) Wiring harness which seems to be in fair condition
3) Ignition computer in the engine compartment
4) Some kind of sensor...maybe the FI temp sensor or something
5) Hall effect sensor on the Distrubitor
6) Maybe the 544 computer is not designed to work reliably in a 85' wiring harness or something that makes the 544 to fail over time. Like it happened in the previous one.
BTW is there a good indy mechanic in the north NJ area who knows really well. I really want to know what the problem is?
I am in the plans of making a V8 conversion (lifelong dream) in my 85'. Bodywise the car is in very good shape with a 3 year paintjob. I just want to keep driving it for a couple more months.
Any clue or suggestions
Thanks
Mike
