I don't think your engine is overheating.It's most likely the temperature compensation board in the instrument panel.I bet if you smack the dash with your fist next time it happens the needle will go back to 9 o'clock.
You can either replace the TCP or bypass it,check the archives or do a search and you;ll find lots of info on this.
