Weird Semi-no start 1980 242 B-21F K-Jet -- More Info 200

Hi Guys,

Thanks to all who have contributed advice adn knoweldge, but the problem still exists. To recap briefly, car was running flawlessly, then overnight, problem appeared. Car will fire, then die. Subsequent attempts to start result in cranking, but no start. If I open the throttle wide while trying to start ON THE FIRST TRY, it will start, and run as long as I keep the rpm's above 2000. Easing off the throttle, even gently, results in the engine dying a bit below 2000 rpm. Subsequent attempts to start after it has run like this result in a no start. After waiting for 20-30 minutes, it will start again, and run, but only if the rpm's are kept high.

Obviously there is fuel and ignition. I cannot find any vaccum leaks, all hoses are new. In the past 6-8 months control pressure regulator, thermal time switch, injectors, oxygen sensor, plugs, cap, rotor, and wiring harness have been replaced. Auxiliary air valve also appears to be operating properly.

New info: about half the time on the first start there is a backfire-type pop from the intake manifold/fuel distributor area. Have not been able to isolate the location. Also, tested the frequency valve and it appears to be operating correctly. With the test relay installed, ignition on, (engine not running), and fuel pump operating the freqnecy valve buzzes and gives the proper dwell reading from the test point hookup.

What am I missing ?
