TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY '79 242 200 1979

I found a '79 242 for sale from a friend of a friend. It is a 1-owner car that needs some TLC. When test driving it yesterday, the steering seemed really loose. The odo is broken @ 60K, and the owner (who inherited it from his grandfather) says it has approx. 80K on it. They are asking $600 for the car.

The A/C is out, and the steering seems a little loose. Any advice?
