Shortcut for changing thermostat? 1984 GLT 200 1984

The manual says to disconnect the lower radiator hose and then attach a hose to the cylinder block drain cock and purge the whoel system. Is all this really necessary? Can't I just disconnect the thermostat mounting bolts, pull out the stuck-open thermostat (car never warms up by the way - only goes to about the 1/8th to 1/4 mark on the temp gauge) and then seat the new one and reattach the housing?
