rear support arm bushing - HELP 120-130

I can not get the new blue poly rear-support arm rear bushing on my '66 122. I was able to get all the others off & replaced on one side, but try as I might I can not get the great big doughnut one that clamps onto the axle at the support arm

(item G in the linked IPD diagram )

when I wrap the new bushing around where it belongs - the two ends of the bushing are well over an inch apart ... it looks like it is seated in the channel as well as it can go. no matter what i've tried, i can not get it compressed enough to get both bracket bolts on - I can get one or the other, but never both.

any advise/thoughts/suggestiong/etc that could help me get the back-end back on the ground & Ursula back on the road will be much appreciated.

thanks

tim
