I have been reading up on brakelight issues (searching archives and FAQs) and I was wondering if my 92 740 wagon is supposed to have black and white (different drivers and passenger side) bulb holders. (It does not - both are black, with same numbers). And the more general question - Why on earth would volvo make 2 different bulb holders that can be switched but will not work properly when switched?? I cannot think of any reason why you could not make it so the identical bulb holder works on either and/or both sides completely identical and interchangeable... Any idea why they did this?
My current problem is my driver side brake light does not work. Changed the bulb, of course, and it still does not work (1157 bulb). I do get 12 volts at the brakelight wire when brake pedal is depressed. I pulled out the bulb holder and both filaments work on the bench! Black wire to ground terminal. Then I apply 12 volts to the parking light terminal, light goes on. Put 12 volts on the other terminal, brighter brake light goes on. The parking light works, so therefore the ground is working. The 2 lights share a common ground, right? Passenger side works properly, and center brake light also works properly. I will do some more testing, and maybe pull out the entire taillight assembly and bench test that. Right now what puzzles me the most is that the (yellow?) wire has 12 volts, the bulb works on the bench, but it does not work in the socket in the car.... MJ
