'81 240 stereo installation; lower console 200 1981

Ack! After years of suffering with the severely handicapped 23 year old premium sound system in my wagon (witness below!), the one remaining speaker decided to die out (I think one of the mounting rivets had seperated and stuck itself to the cone somehow, frying it or whatever).

So I decided it was time to get a new system. Got a set of Rockford Fosgate 4" speakers at Best Buy... spent about 4 hours installing them all. Weeee. Much improved quality, even running off the old deck. But I also got a new Pioneer CD deck... figured I could install that myself too.

But of course, the old deck is in the lower console, not the upper dash. So it needs a refitting for the fascia of course, and probably a new harness I guess. That's not a big deal.

But then I open the panels up around the console... and it terrifies me. I don't want to have to disconnect all the wires on the upper row of instruments since I'll immediately forget how to reconnect them... and it would appear that you have to remove the gear shift (manual) to even remove the old stereo, as it's so deep.

Am I freaking out for no good reason here? Does someone (Crutchfield?) make a good installation guide that will negate my fears? Or should I go to a Volvo dealer to get it installed?
