unidentified rear (wheel) sound (?) 200 1988

Hi. Yesterday my 200,000+ mile 1988 automatic xmsn Volvo 240 started making a new sound. It was a rotational, metal-on-metal-like scraping noise that emanated from the rear of the car. It is not a continuous scraping noise; it is rather more like rant-rant-rant-rant-etc. It is frequency dependent. It happens when my speed is low and seems to initiate when I am cornering. That said, today it seemed to occur at a higher speed (~40 mph), but again while my foot is off the accelerator. It does /not/ occur when I step on the brakes. That said, I have stepped on the brakes in order to slow down. It can be persistent until I accelerate again.

What could it be???

Brian
