Brakelight switch 120-130

Would it be possible that the rear brake lights fail to come on because teh brake system is sludgy and calipers/wh/cyl need to be reaired/replaced? It does take a good push to stop my '66 s/w and am looking at a major brake session soon.......also if anyone has done brakes...did you keep or replace the brake booster unit. I have heard they cannot be rebuilt successfully and the new ones are quite expensive....thoughts ????
