82 242: Apparent Non-Sealing Gas Cap and Lack of Tank Vacuum 200

I did something similar. I put the new cap on for the test then returned it claiming it was so big it didn't allow the gas door to close.

There may be some confusion here. I don't think there is ever suppose to be vacuum in the tank. That would just make it hard on the pump and might eventually stop the flow. The valves in the cap are to let air in to prevent vacuum but not allow fumes out. When the tank warms up there's a line to the charcoal canister that absorbs the gas vapors. When the engine starts, the fumes in the canister are sucked into the intake. Hence, no fumes are released into the air.
