Another OD issue 200 1983

Fellas:
I got an M46 tranny off of a wrecked 1985. For free! PO swears it's in good shape, so I assume he meant the OD, too. Since mine has never worked since I got it a couple of years ago, should I just swap the OD or should I just go ahead and drop the whole tranny? My clutch is a couple years old and is in good shape. No leaks from the rear seal. Your input please. BTW, is there a way to check/bench test OD?
