Temp gauge dead 700 1987

'87 760 Ti. Temp gauge won't move at all. I shorted what I think are the wires to the sender (under #2 intake runner right?) and still no gauge movement. All other gauges are working. Anyone with experience here? Did I short the right wires to test the function of the gauge? Do these have a temp compensator board like the 240s that can fail? Location of it? My wiring harness is a little rotted but I'd really like to avoid replacing it at the moment. Just wondering where to go from here. TIA.
