The new old 122 (222)station wagon that I got a few months ago had the
clutch master cylinder out for refurbishment. I had one laid back that
also needed work so I cleaned up the bore with a broomstick and 1000 grit
wetordry paper and was about to install it when the1master cylinder on
my other wagon finally gave up. Since I drive that wagon on a regular basis,
I put it in there and removed the one that I had had in the car since about
1987, using only DOT5 fluid. The cylinder was in good shape but the rubber
cup was badly worn (not sure how it worked at all). I have since cleaned
that one up and put the other kit I had in it and it is ready to go. The
third cylinder that I have, had around for a long time, is deeply pitted in
the bottom probably from entrained water and galvanic corrosion between
the aluminum cylinder and the steel piston. I am pretty sure that normal
honing will not clean it up. I've checked with White Post Restorations,
and they will sleeve the cylinder and rebuild it to their specs and guarantee
it forever, but their price is about twice the price of a new cylinder.
I'm looking for the easy way out and wonder if I might ream this cylinder
to 13/16" and find a piston and cup to fit it.
Does anyone know if there is a Lucas/Girling 13/16" clutch master cylinder
or where I might find a piston and kit for one?
