Just how safe is my car? 200

I have had a 1978 245 for the past 7 months which I bought principally for its safety reputation. It's a great, reliable car and I feel very safe on the road.

However, considering the number of SUVs on the roads here in Australia, just how safe is my car should I have the misfortune of hitting, or being hit by, one of these type of vehicles, or any vehicle for that matter? My car was obviously once very safe, in 1978, but the roads are now quite different.

I suppose my question is: Just how safe is a 25 year old Volvo on the roads today?
