My square 74 shifter has fine vertical splines. You might be able to tap the knob from below.Put an open end wrench around the stick and tap at that with a hammer. I like the square knob, myself. I push the lower lip of the boot outside the sheetmetal, with the upper lip above the carpet, which seems to give the tightest fit.
