I used to work in a body shop that serviced a lot of Volvos.
WHat you're seeing isn't unusual at all. I like the looks of most of the Volvo alloys, but in practicality, the 5 and 6 spoke 700T wheels (15" and 16" respectively) are not very resistant to spot pressure. They are OK if you have smooth streets and don't hit any curbs. If they get hit in an accident, they're gone. If they get hit by a curb (well, you know what I mean) they're also done for.
You can have a fender bender that causes 5x more damage than an accident with cars going faster. It all depends on the situation. Depending on where the car gets hit, you could see more damage than you think appropriate... but that's just how it goes.
One thing I'd check is the rear wheel bearing. In fact, I'd be adamant that they check that. The reason I say that is, any offset impact (out of the normal forces that a bearing gets) can cause a problem that might not show up as a failure, for quite a while.
YOu probably have $2500 of damage from that little hit. I should post my damage estimate from one of my Volvos that got nailed. Damage was similar -- rear door, wheel arch, wheel. Damage? Over $10k. You never know what you might get.
