SU Carb. Adjustment 444-544

I just bought a 64, PV544 and the little history I have is that the carbs were worked on about a year ago and at some point there was an engine modification. Not sure what was done, maybe a different cam? Here is my problem, I hope someone can help.
The idle is very high, but the car seemed to run well, plenty of power and no engine missing, etc. After it got warned up,no choke, it did stall at stops.

I tried to adjust the carbs but when the idle is lowered, even a little, it stalls after about 5 seconds. I get the feeling the fuel mixture is all messed up. How do I start from scratch?

If I tighten the jets all the way, is there a starting point to adjusting them richer? Like three full turns? Of course I am guessing and a little frustrated so any help is really appreciated.

I am not sure I can syncronize the carbs by ear. It is really noisy in the garage so if someone has a UNISYN they are willing to sell, that might help also.

Dennis
