Weird problem with headlights 200 1987

SO tonight I decided to address the non-working high beams on my 87 244.
Checked the fuses previously but checked again to be sure. Yup, they're fuses. No problems there. The switch wiring looks perfect and also quite robust- large blue and yellow wires for the turn signals, and a brown one for the high beam contact. All intact, switch feels proper. I did have one years ago that someone short got into the car and pushed the lever hard FORWARD with their knee- the stalk & switch came apart. They're quite strong for a pull back, but not a push forward.

Anyway, under the hood, removed and checked the relay out, good contact between the coil pins and one set of the power pins. The relay wasnt' clicking so I opened it up- nothing inside to solder or repair and it was in beautiful shape. Lovely little mechanism too. Manually actuating it or powering on the bench resulted in proper behavior.

A closer look at the wires after cleaning off the power steering grime showed the problem- a brown wire worn through paper thin. On this car, before I got it the bracket that holds the coil had broken in two places, and come adrift- it got into the wires behind the battery and rubbed against some of them. This wire was still attached by insulation, but the copper had actually been cut! Weird! A quick strip-and-splice and all is well.

Happy for the quick and easy fix. Cross that one off the list...
