Stumped with problem! 200 1983

Were you looking for advice on the girl friend or car? I will assume it is your car as I don't think myself or anyone here is quallified in the area of girl friends. (HA HA) I hope you are not missing an aniversary or other 'important' day for you and/or her.

It takes three things for the IC engine to run; fuel/air, compression, and spark. You said the timing belt is not broken, so you should have compression. The coil is producing a spark, so look first for the problem in the fuel system.

Check the easy stuff:
Have you checked the fuses for the fuel pumps?
Do you have gas? If so, is there any reason to suspect that it might be contaminated with water or ?????? i.e. did the problem occur shortly after filling up, especially at an unfamiliar service station. A friend of mine was at an unfamiliar station and filled his car with diesel fuel by mistake and it behaved very badly.
Do you hear the main pump running when the key is first turned on.

Check to see if the injectors are "ticking" as the engine is cranking. If not the ecu is not seeing an engine rpm signal. In the '83 model, I believe that this comes from a hall sensor in the distributor. This signal must be present, or the ecu will not "turn on" the fuel pump relay.

You have two relays for the LH ignition system. The first is called the system relay and it is obviously working because you have spark. This relay comes on when the ignition switch is on. It enables several items including the fuel injectors. I do not know if your car is equiped with a radio supression relay. If so, this is also another likely culpret. This relay provides +12V to the injectors. The relay isolates the injector power to the under-hood area because the coils in the injectors can generate lots of electrical noise which can 'get into' the radio.

The second relay is the fuel pump relay. You should be able to hear or feel this relay activate when the engine is cranking. If not, no fuel delivery and probably the result of no rpm signal.

Hope that these thoughts help.

Dan
