Erratic Poor Performance / Stalling 700 1988

Hello everyone 8)

I got a '88 740 GLE 5sp non-turbo. Weird stuff has been happening lately.

- Will erratically change to poor performance while driving. There are no apparent indicators for when this will happen. The engine will sound something like vroom..vroom..vroom while idling (for any other car this might be a plus, not this one). The car shakes. The shaking seems to be most prominent when I only give it a little gas. It becomes decreasingly prominent as I accelerate. However, if I turn off the car while driving, then release the clutch to jump start the car, it will return to normal. I've noticed this behavior for a while and seems like it is becoming more frequent. Do you think it may be the ECU or equivalent that has gone bad and when I restart the car, it gets reset?

- Occasionally stalls coming out of first gear, unless I give it a lot of gas which is occapanied by a rich smell, of course.

I don't really want to bury the car yet, as car payments in this economy are very undesirable. Any ideas?

Many thanks for your help,
Niclas
