240 DL O2 sensor 200

Hi all, I bought my 88 240 DL (290,000) a few months ago off a friend. It failed the last inspection due to emmissions. The service guy told my friend that he unplugged the O2 sensor and the car then passed the test. Does this make any sense to anyone out there. The car runs great, I get about 25 mpg and other than the ticking from obviously tired valves the engine is fine. Bye the way, the mechanic didnt give him the sticker.
