Speedometer cable question 200 1980

When removing the instrument cluster (1980, has the original 240 style cluster unlike 81-93), I pulled it out just a few inches from the dash but the speedometer cable had already disconnected itself. There's a black collar that screws onto the back of the speedometer that had part of its opening broken off. The speedometer was working fine before I pulled the cluster and the cluster had been removed once before by a mechanic (not sure if the collar was intact before I pulled the cluster) - is it essential to have the collar on the cable? If I just plug the cable back into the speedometer and ignore the now-useless collar, will that be sufficient? I don't want to have to ever pull the cluster again. Thanks!
