Replaced Transmission - won't shift out of 1st gear - HELP! 200 1984

I bought a 1984 240 GL for $90. It ran great but needed a new transmission (AW70). I bought a 1984 turbo with a bad motor and good transmission for $180. The woman who sold it to me told me the transmission was fine. When I got the car all put back together I took it out for a test drive. The car would not shift out of first. I did once for a brief second but dropped back into 1st. That was it. I ran the rpm's up plenty high enough that it should have been shifting. The transmission was very strong in 1st and reverse. It went right into gear and didn't slip at all. Any ideas? I'm going to flush the fluid and add the Lucas brand transmission additive (heard it was the best). One thing I should mention - when I had the good transmission out I pulled the pan to clean it up. Inside there are two tubes that run down, over and then up to another location. One was loose at both ends. Not so loose that it just fell out on its own but loose enought that it felt like it could fall out going down a bumpy road (my driveway) and maybe not seal properly. It looks like they are just a light interference fit. Could this be the source of the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure this would be a much faster job the second time around but I'm not very anxious to find out how much faster.
