Cam gear weirdness? Can an engine run with timing 180 degrees off? 700

I was removing the cam gear last night to repace the leaking front cam seal and was shocked when I pulled the gear from the front of the camshaft a little piece of metal fell onto the splash pan and the locating pin (press pin) in the cam gear was 180 degrees off, or on the opposite side of where the locating pin is pressed into the camshaft. Is this possible? The engine should not, could not run with crank\cam timing 180 degrees off. I did not feel the pin shear in two while I was removing the timing belt or tensioner. The little piece of metal fell out from behind the cam gear was part of the sheared off locating pin? Right?

Has any one experienced this before.

Am I correct in assuming that I must now remove the old broken pin and replace it with a new one that lines the camshaft and cam gears up properly? This is really weird. Any comments and help putting the car back together would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time to do any timing belt, cam seal work and I did not find any specific info in the FAQ.
