WILL THIS CAUSE AN EXPLOSION? 700

91, 740 Sedan
non-turbo

What I need to know is whether the "inlet pipe" on the rear muffler goes more toward the spring/fender/wheel, or if you loosen the around-the-body-clamp, flip the muffler on the other side, and it goes closer to the gas tank?

If you look at the front of the rear muffler, it has an oval shape, and you will see that the pipe coming out of the inlet side (the pipe with the slit that joins with the over the axle pipe), is NOT centered in the muffler, it is off to one side. So, when the muffler is in place, if you are looking at it with your face towards the rear of the car, this inlet pipe will either be more toward the gas tank, right side, or more toward the spring/fender wheel area, left side. You can easily change the position from left to right by unloosening the bracket around the body and flipping it over 180 degrees.

Now, if you go to the other side of the rear muffler, and face yourself toward the front of the car, the rear muffler outlet pipe (the one without a slit) is centered in the middle of the muffler. But this centered pipe is either more toward the top or the bottom. I have it oriented toward the top, but I am not sure if it goes that way or not. Of course mine is hitting the plastic bumper under-skirt/shroud.

So, when you flip the rear muffler over 180 degrees, the front pipe moves from the one side to the other, and the rear pipe moves from the up to down position. If it flipped the muffler over, I would have the clearance needed to avoid hitting the bumper under-skirt, BUT the inlet pipe would then be closer to the gas tank, AND THIS IS WHAT HAS ME CONCERNED!

ANYONE DO A MUFFLER JOB RECENTLY ON A 91 740 SEDAN, OR WILL BE DOING ONE SOON?
