headliner ideas 700

On my 91 740, I pulled the headliner out and stuck it back in using contact spray cement. It worked out rather nicely. This is what I did. The headliner was sagging very badly. I loosened the courtesy light and removed the rearview mirror. I pulled the old headliner out, washed it in the washing machine. Tide and a little Oxiclean will work wonders on removing nicotine and kid finger prints. After washing, I dried the headliner in the dryer, lowest heat setting. I used a plastic scrub brush to remove the foam that was still sticking to the cardboard part of the headliner. This part is messy, but will vacuum right up. I masked off the trim that surrounds the headliner. I then sprayed a very liberal coat of contact cement on the cardboard part of the headliner. I laid out some old newspapers on the garage floor and placed the headliner face down on the newspapers. I then sprayed a liberal coat of contact cement on the headliner. After the contact cement was dry to the touch, I placed two long dowel rods under the headliner to transport it back to the car. I then had my son hold the headliner up using the dowel rods, while I positioned the headliner to go back in the car. Starting at the courtesy light, I affixed the headliner just around the courtesy light. Avoid touching any other part of the headliner to the roof at this point. I then affixed each corner of the headliner to each corner of the roof, and positioned the headliner where it goes around the rear view mirror. I then worked my way around the perimeter, affixing the headliner to the roof. Then I started back at the courtesy light and worked my way out towards the perimeter affixing the headliner to the roof. Total time out and back in was about 4 hours and 6 beers.:) Cost about $20 for the contact cement.
