Checking spark?

Could someone elaborate on checking the spark using an extra spark plug? what part of the spark plug gets grounded and where?

On a side note I was trying to test the spark with an extra spake plug before I managed to ground it my wife turned the ignition. It was like getting jackhammer punched in the arm, bvv-vvt-ttt! So I am sure the first plug has power for cylinder 1. But I want to make sure I do it right for the other cylinders.
