Intermittant Cruise Control Problem 200 1989

The cruise control on my 89 240 works most of the time. When it works, it operates perfectly at all speeds, brake cutoff and resume works every time. When it doesn't work, it won't engage at all. Sometimes it just cuts out while engaged adn cruising, won't re-engage. Sometimes when it cuts out, pushing the button will re-engage it, and it will work fine. It does not appear to be related to the brake light circuit.

It's a random problem, doesn't seem to be related to cold weather, hot weather, wet weather, length of operation, bumpy vs. smooth ride, etc. Sometimes it won't work for a couple of days. Sometimes, it won't work when I first try it after starting the car, but then will work when I try it later on the same trip.

Any thoughts on where to look for a solution?
