Been tinkering with Grandma's car (my mother-in-law) for the last week, a 92 944, while she has my 84 244 as a loaner. She thought the steering effort was a bit high-- she used to drive an 83 240 with the big wheel and a Camry in between. To me, the effort seemed the same as our 89 245 with the same pump, and I guess, rack. Tires were right at 36 lbs.

Anyhow, last weekend I tried lengthening the spring in the pump as described in the FAQ. Went from 1-7/8 to 2-1/8 inches, but didn't notice any improvement.

Car wanted to pull to the right if you let go of the wheel. Swapping tires L-R fixed that. Got my replacement cone bushings in the mail this afternoon. What an easy job compared with the 240! Seemed to improve the steering response, but so far I've only driven around the block. This may be obvious, but it seems like the steering effort was partially due to the need to take up the slop in the soft cone bushing before the wheel actually changed direction. Will this help with the parking lot mishaps?
