Popping sound when started.....sounds like on the Rt. side. 85 245DL Auto w/181,000mi. 200

Hello brickers.

This problem has me puzzled. Its more annoying than anything.

There is a popping noise coming from the Rt. side of the car (might be exhaust related) when started . Seems worse when the car is cold.

The engine starts right up and idles fine, no miss, plenty of power and no other driveability concerns. The car runs great.

Could this be a backfire? Exhaust pipe under tension is being released? Engine mounts too soft.

Any help is appreciated.
