HELP! Fuel tank problem 200

So today I uncovered the little access hatch in the trunk to get at the fuel sender unit harness because I have been having an intermittant fuel gauge problem. I touched the rubber part of the sender and the whole piece just broke off from the tank. Good thing my day was good up to this point or I would have completly lost it. Its all rusted and full of dirt on the tank and the connector or whatever it was that broke off. Is it ok to drive like this. I understand my fuel gauge will not work at all but thats ok for now. Should I disconnect any wires from the other end of the connector so there is no power going to the end?? When I do decide to fix this, how difficult will it be, can I repair it from the access hatch or is a tank drop necessary????
Help me Obi-Wan.....
