240 oxygen sensor - Bad or Not? 200 1989

Hi,

Took my car to mechanic after check engine light came on. 0xygen sensor was DEAD. It was replaced. Drove 15 miles. Car drove fine, but a little sluggish, then Check Engine Light came on again. Mechanic says Oxygen Sensor is still the problem, sensor seems fine, but they will replace with another. Is there any other reason that this can happen, another part or situation that may be causing this code to come up in the computer. Trying to avoid many trips back to the garage.

p.s. These mechanics seems to know what they are doing

Thanks in advance,

James
