red lining it 200 1985

Excuse this post if it should really belong in the opinions forum. Yesterday, I was driving my car on the interstate 10 at an average of 70mph. I left with only the gas guage needle being right above the redline. I drove 38 miles before filling the car up with fuel. I was 1/2 way on the red when I refueled the Volvo up. This really surprised me. It was also a very nervous trip! Now, I'm curious how much longer the car would've gone before dying. How far (miles) have you guys and gals gotten from redline to running out of fuel? I know this couldn't have been good for the fuel pump, but I had no choice. Tell me your story! Thanks.
