Stereo - removal and illumination 200 1988

I'm replacing my dead stock radio with a new Blaupunkt CD/receiver that just arrived from Crutchfield. First of all, after taking the two extra gauge knock-outs out in between the radio and the instrument cluster, I exposed the two screws on that side and took them out. I thought that might be enough, and that the right side of the radio mount was just hooked on in some way. Without forcing it too much, I couldn't get it out. So I'm wondering what other connections I need to get at to get the right side of the stereo free. Do I need to take the glovebox out, or even the dashboard? I hope not....the Bentley doesn't say.

Secondly, my new stereo has an orange wire for "illumination." I presume that this is for a dimmer so that the LED illumination of the stereo can be dimmed with all of the other dashboard lights when the rheostat is turned. This function was not a part of the original Volvo wiring, and in Crutchfield's Volvo wire adapter kit the instructions say to just connect the illumination wire to the red wire for switched power. Presumably this will result in the stereo's illumination to be always at full on when the car is powered up. It's not a big deal, but it would be nice to have it attached to the rheostat as Blaupunkt intended, so instead of following Crutchfield's instructions, can I just split off the wire coming from the rheostat dimmer to the instrument cluster and attach that to my orange wire illumination lead?
