winter rims 200

I'm driving an '85 245 turbo and plan to drive it through the winter. I live in Vermont. The sand & salt will kill the wheels(?). I have 14" steel rims off a DL that I can put on for the winter. The question is about the pin sticking out of the front wheels. It's like a sixth lug only in miniature. It won't allow the 14" rims to go on. There is a little hole on the 14" rims close to where it needs to be, but not a match. I took off the pin and it seems to fit ok.

The engineers at Volvo put that pin there for some reason, what's the catch?

Sean
