Two General (Possibly Dumb) Questions 700

I assume this is a dumb question, especially for this board, but why is it that I see 940 cars or 740 cars advertised as "944" or "745" on eBay? When I look at the car, it is always a 740 or 940, but its title has a 4 or 5 for its third digit rather than a zero. I've even seen some posters on this board call their cars a "244" or "245", though I've never seen a Volvo emblem other than 240/60, 740/60, 940/60. Is this just a coincidence?

Also, I recently bought a 1994 940 non-turbo wagon to go along with my 1990 740 GL wagon. They have the same B230F engine and AW70 transmission, but they have significantly different shifting points and gas mileage propensities. My 740 shifts into 4th at right at 3000 RPMs, while my 940 shifts into 4th at about 3800 RPMs. When I'm going 65 on the 740, my RPM level is about 2500, but its right at 3000 RPMs on the 940. As would be expected, I get around 28-31 mpg on the highway with my 740, but only 25-28 mpg on the highway with my 940. Why is it that the same tranny and engine would yield such differences? According to the government site that calculates gas mileage, the 940 (19 city, 27 highway) should get about the same gas mileage as the 740 (20 city, 26 highway), but at least in my case they don't. Anybody know the reason?
