more alternator idiocy from a mechanical idiot 200 1979

Alternator update for my 1979 245...a beloved, wonderful car...

I got the alternator in. Also put a new battery in. Car started really hard. Had to crank it like hell. Figured it was because it'd been sitting a few days.

Got it going. Drove it three miles. Stopped, got coffee. Came back out. Battery dead. Got a jump. Got going...for about a mile...stalled, battery dead again. This time I could not even jump it.

So, new battery, new alternator, battery dies within a couple miles and will not restart...please, folks...what next? I really love this car and want to save it. My patience and credit line are wearing thin....

It sounded like the car was cranking like hell but not getting gas. Strange.
