Power problems and the AC compressor

My "new" '93 940 runs great. However, on really hot days I have had a few instances when the car will hardly move away from a stop. I step on the gas and the car barely creeps forward until, about half way through the intersection the car begins to accelerate. I have found that if I turn off the AC quickly, the car then will take off nearly normally. This leads me to suspect the AC compressor is coming on just at the time I hit the accelerator and the extra load slows the car down. This leads me to two questions:
1. Does the board think the problem is from the AC and is that normal? Notice how I sneaked two questions in there?
2. Years ago I recall seeing an aftermarket accessory switch which was controlled by the intake manifold vacuum. The switch was wired in line with the AC compressor clutch. When you pressed the accelerator down to start off or on a hill, the switch would cut off the AC compressor and allow full power to go to the wheels. Has anyone seen something like this switch recently? It may have been some J.C. Whitney item.
I await your wisdom and thanks for the help.
