Cousins:
Recently got a car in that I'm brokering for the owner. Subject is an '86 240 w/ 120K miles, standard tranny. Overall clean car. Recent timing belt and tensioner by unknown shop. I just gave it a tuneup, checked & adjusted air/fuel, throttle body clean, oil change. Compression read : 145,145,146,150. After above maintenance, car ran much better, maybe a little surge at cruse. Planned to check fuel pressures.
The oil I drained was very dirty.
Neighbor came over and expressed interest in purchasing car, so we went on a test cruise. We got about a mile from home, and as we were coming to a stop lite, the motor stopped. Sitting in the passenger seat, I thought that the neighbor had shifted into 5th and killed the car, but after trying to restart and then jump starting the car, it is clear that the engine doesn't want to turn over.
Neighbor thought the temp gauge seemed a little high.
I pulled the plugs, but no evidence of water in the cylinders, indicating a blown head gasket, causing water hammer. I have heard about camshafts seizing, but have not experienced the problem before. Tonite I will check the oil for any evidence of water, check the radiator for signs of oil, and then pull the valve cover to check for the camshaft problem.
My thinking is that if the cam seized, the (new) belt would either break or strip the teeth,no? Any ideas out there?
