Sputter-sputter-pop-pop (engine management problem) 700 1989

Severe sputtering and backfiring after engine gets warm and during auto-crossing only. (not hitting rev limiter; plenty of fuel in tank)

Recent tune up using NGK plugs and Bosch everything else. Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT)sensor is new. Might be running a bit rich due to P.O. fooling with the AMM as tamper plug is missing. TPS adjusted correctly.

A mechanic also racing said he thinks it sounded like signal from the O2 sensor is faulty once the "closed loop" (?) condition shows up as engine warms.

What do you think I need to check? Probably can't replace the O2 sensor before tomorrow's race. Can I disconnect the O2 in order to keep the sytem in "open loop" condition?
