Rear Brake Pad/Rotor/Pin Questions 900 1993

I'm changing the pads/hardware and rotors on my rear ATE brakes. All has gone smoothly so far. I bought the Volvo original pads that come with one metal shim and one coated shim per pad. Q: Does it matter what order the metal shim and coated shim are put back in? What is the purpose of the coating?

Also, I got aftermarket pins and springs to replace the old ones, but now I've found out that they are not quite the same pins. Can the old ones be reused or is this a safety issue? Any help much appreciated.
