Siezed AC Compressor....Options? 200 1986

The AC Compressor on my son's 86 244 siezed up and destroyed the belt in a cloud of smoke. This serves to disable the power syeering.

I called the local Volvo Shop (extremely reputable) and got an estimate that is almost what I paid for the car. They did say that I might be able to get a new clutch for the compressor pully, pull the wire off the compressor, and run it as an idler pully to get the power steering back.

This appeals to me because the cost is much more reasonable, I can probably do it myself, and you don't really need AC in Coastal Southern California.

What do you think, should I be able to convert the siezed AC compressor to an idler pully??
