tach = 1800-2200, WOT, m46 slides out of gear... baffled 700

1985 745t m46

Posted about this problem a few days back and have some more detailed information after a long drive and full test of the various symptoms, etc.

The following conditions:

1. Tach sub-2250 rpms
2. WOT, full boost

Cause the transmission to slide partially out of gear. It feels like when you play the clutch at a light or something to build up some power; there is SOME power, but the tach revs high quickly and obviously the gear is not totally engaged. This happens in ANY gear, from OD to 2nd (I never find myself at WOT in 1st gear with the short shift point in the m46).

The wierd thing is that if the tach is higher than 2500 or so it will NOT slide out at all... I can keep it floored for a minute and it will hold tight and stay fully in gear. I've tested it in every gear and could never get it to "break free" under full boost like it does sub-2250rpms or so.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem? I've had manual transmissions fail on me before, and they usually make some noise or fail ro perform across the board; meaning the symptoms indicate (to me) that the transmission is fine.

On idea I had that might be noteworthy. The clutch currently fully disengages at the very end of the pedal's travel. I was thinking of possibilities and figured that maybe the cutch is slightly engaged all the time, and that when I floor it at low RPMs the resistance on the drive shaft causes it to "break free". Is this even possible?

If anyone has any idea what my problem might be I'd love to hear it. I should note that the tranny fluid is nice, full and clean.

Thanks,
rt
