no compression head gasket replacement 700

I'm changing a head gasket for a friend and I'm getting no compression reading.

This is 16v. I've taken great care to get belt lined up. But nothing, not even a blip.

The head has been redone. I've taken off the camshafts, and put the gauge on, and I do get a real low reading, apparently from the compression of the air in the cylinder, (intake valves and exhaust valves appear to be closing okay).

I've checked the hydralic lifters and they are not stuck.

Any ideas.
