adjusting the clutch.. how do i know what is too far? what is just right? 200 1984

84.5 245ti, my clutch pedal has a ton of play in it and i thought id see if i could remedy this. how much should i adjust the clutch, is there a method where i can measure and stuff? I want to do this before i drive home tomorrow, i tried to put the new alt. in today only to find out autozone had given me the wrong part. new one comes in tomorrow and will be promptly installed (man is it a pain to work around the turbo).
